Business Rates privacy notice
This privacy notice explains what information the council needs for valuations, billing and collection of business rates.
In order to provide this service, it is necessary for the council to collect, store and process personal data relating to customers.

Who is responsible for your information?
Chesterfield Borough Council is the data controller for the personal information collected.
Purposes of processing your personal data
We need to process your personal information in order to manage and administer valuations, and to manage the billing and collection of business rates. We also process applications for exemptions and rate relief. We may also use your information to meet other legal obligations, for example for the prevention and/or detection of crime including fraud and protection of public funds.

Under data protection legislation, we are permitted to use your information this way because we have a legal obligation to collect business rates. Related legislation includes:
- the Non-Domestic Rating (Collection and Enforcement) (Local Lists) Regulations 1989
- the Local Government Finance Acts 1988 and 1992
Who we share your personal data with
In accordance with exemptions in the Data Protection Act for the prevention and detection of crime, we may share your information with the following:
- HM Revenues and Customs
- the police
We also have a legal obligation to share information with the Valuation Office Agency.
