Chesterfield Borough Council are currently recruiting a Structural Engineer to work in our corporate property and estates team. 

The successful applicant will be responsible for the delivery of a wide range of jobs both for the council and external clients.

The successful candidate will deputise for the Senior Structural Engineer as necessary and manage the work of specific projects.

This role includes being involved in the provision of technical support and advice in compliance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations and other statutory duties of designer, client, client agent, and principal designer, as imposed by the Construction Design and Management Regulations.

The successful candidate will have special responsibility for geotechnical engineering including site investigation, foundation engineering, contamination, land reclamation, and providing advice to private developers and other departments.

The post holder will share advice on:

  • land sales and purchases
  • concept design
  • detail design
  • technical drawing
  • cost estimates
  • tender and contract documentation
  • tender analysis
  • site supervision and control relating to structural and/or geotechnical aspects of both building and civil engineering projects

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • the supervision of the design team on capital schemes
  • provide structural advice on 'dangerous structures' as required
  • deal with ‘forensic engineering’
  • investigating and reporting on building failures
  • negotiating with insurers
  • loss adjusters and external consultants
  • designing and supervising remedial works

Structural condition surveys and detailed reports of all different forms of buildings including system housing buildings are also an important aspect of this post. 

The successful applicant must ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and other associated legislation in respect of the groups’ activities for example, Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM), Party Wall Act and Defective Dwelling Act. 
 
A degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) with extensive experience in structural engineering is required for the post along with experience and knowledge of civil/structural engineering works, including HSE regulations. Experience of using computer-aided design (CAD) and Microsoft Office is also essential with some knowledge of TEDDS or Master Series preferred.
