Communal areas and lifts

Communal areas and lifts

Our blocks of flats have 'communal' areas and facilities that are shared by the tenants that live there.

Reporting a communal area repair

The council is responsible for repairs to communal areas in blocks of flats, including stairs, door entry systems, communal lighting, landings, communal windows, drying areas and sheds.

Keeping communal areas clean and safe

Our environment officers carry out monthly checks in the communal areas in our blocks of flats to make sure they are safe for all our tenants to enjoy.

They will check for:

  • furniture and rubbish left outside the block
  • fire doors that have been locked or wedged open
  • damage to main entrance doors and meter boxes
  • build up of rubbish in bin stores and obstructions on landings and other communal areas

The team also identify problems such as waste left in communal bin areas, fly tipping, dog fouling, littering, graffiti and overgrown vegetation, and take action to resolve these issues.

The video below provides useful information on tenant responsibilities in communal areas.

Some of our blocks of flats have a weekly cleaning service of internal communal areas. Find out more about our communal area cleaning service review, or watch the video below to find out more about our sustainability policy for the cleaning products we use.

Reporting an issue

If you need to report an issue related to a communal area, please contact our environment officers by email at housingmanagement@chesterfield.gov.uk or telephone 01246 345142.

Lift safety and maintenance in our independent living schemes

There are passenger lifts in all of our independent living schemes and additional stairlifts at Markham Court.

Our lifts are managed by an external contractor. They are serviced and tested monthly to ensure your safety. Please contact Careline to report a breakdown or any issues.

Using lifts safely

  • do not use the lift in the event of a fire
  • do not exceed lift capacity
  • do not access the lift in an oversized scooters that may cause damage and possibly get stuck
  • in the event of a lift breakdown, there is an intercom system in the lift that links directly to Careline
