Cricket has been played in Queen's Park for over 100 years, and the first game was played there on the 5 May 1894.

Since then the pavilion has been home to Chesterfield Cricket Club.

Derbyshire played first-class cricket in Queen's Park for 100 years before deciding in 1998 to play all their home games at Derby.

After Queen's Park underwent a £4m facelift, financed by the Borough Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the County Cricket Club and the council agreed a five-year deal to bring cricket back to the park, which is rated by commentators as one of the most beautiful settings for cricket anywhere in the world.

A five-day festival made a triumphant return, attracting bumper crowds, in 2006 and has the event remains one of the highlights of the summer for cricket followers from a wide area. A new five-year contract was signed in 2011 committing to at least five days of county cricket per year in the park.
