Sunbeds
The Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010 came into effect on 8 April 2011.
The Act requires duty holders to:
- prevent the use of sunbeds to under 18s
- ensure that no offer is made to under 18s of the use of a sunbed
- prevent access to under 18s to restricted zones (restricted zone is a space/room, wholly or partly enclosed, where a sunbed is located)
The Department of Health have produced a guidance booklet to assist sunbed businesses in understanding their new duties under the Act and comply with the legislation (see below).
Health and Safety Enforcement Officers from Chesterfield Borough Council have recently contacted premises known to contain sunbeds to provide information and guidance in relation to this matter.
Chesterfield Borough Council have also been part of a Derbyshire-wide campaign, involving all the Derbyshire Authorities and the Derbyshire PCT in raising the awareness of the public about the risks from using sunbeds and the imminent legislation.
If you are a business operator who requires more information on the new legislation and what you must do to comply with it, please contact the Health and Safety Team on 01246 345345.
If you are a member of the public who requires more information on the risks associated with sunbeds please see "Reducing health risks from the use of ultraviolet (UV) tanning equipment" or contact the Health and Safety Team on 01246 345345.
Offences committed under the Act can lead to a fine not exceeding £20,000.
