In 1854 Britain and France went to war with Russia in the Crimea, the terrible hospital conditions for the wounded soldiers became a source of public outcry and Florence Nightingale was called up to lead a team of nurses to work at the hospital in Scutari - the work she did there is legendary and made her a household name, even 150 years later.
